How it's made
1. Preparing the Clay
The creation of Moroccan Zellige begins with natural clay, sourced from the finest local materials. The clay is carefully kneaded by skilled artisans to achieve the perfect texture, then shaped by hand into raw tile forms. This step preserves the authentic, handmade quality that defines Zellige.

2. Sun-Drying and Firing
Once shaped, the tiles are
laid out to dry under the warm Moroccan sun. This natural
drying process ensures the
tiles are ready for the next
step without cracking or losing their form. They are then fired in traditional wood-burning
kilns, where the uneven
distribution of heat gives each
tile its unique character and
strength.

3. Hand-Glazing
After firing, the tiles are glazed by hand using natural pigments. Each glaze is carefully applied to create the vibrant colors and rich finishes that Zellige tiles are known for. No two tiles are ever exactly alike, as subtle variations in the glaze and firing process make each one a small work of art.

4. Precision Cutting
The final step is the cutting process, where artisans use precision tools to shape the tiles into intricate designs such as squares, hexagons, or stars. This meticulous work reflects centuries of craftsmanship, resulting in tiles that are not only beautiful but also timeless.
